Open and Affordable Course Content Resources for Faculty
Looking to lower textbook costs for your students? One great way is to use resources already available through the library. These materials include online materials like ebooks, streaming media, and digital collections, as well as items from our physical collections like books and DVDs, which can be placed on reserve for short term loan.
Another way to lower textbook costs while also having the opportunity to customize your teaching materials is to use an open educational resource, or OER. If you’re interested in using OER, it is highly recommended that you start with a consultation with the OER Librarian.

Once you’ve chosen your course materials, it’s time to report your adoptions! If you’re using open educational resources or library content, you can let your students know where to find their course materials for free by reporting your OER usage to the bookstore. You can also help the library track the use of library content and OER across the VCU community, calculate savings for our students, and shape programming to support the continued usage of open and affordable course content at VCU.
- Report Your Adoptions to the Bookstore (and consider adding a note: “This book is available as a free version online/through VCU Libraries. Please see your instructor for additional information.”)
