VCU Libraries now offers four new gender-inclusive restrooms
February 14, 2023Three new single-use, gender-inclusive restrooms are now open on the first floor of James Branch Cabell Library.
Also new, The Health Sciences Library on the MCV Campus opened an accessible gender-inclusive restroom in the fall 2022. It is located on the first floor.
This investment in improved amenities is part of VCU Libraries’ intention to create the most accessible and inclusive spaces possible. Creation of these new restrooms on both campuses is the result of a recommendation from The VCU Libraries’ Gender-Inclusive Work Group, which submitted their final report in 2018 recommending adding restroom facilities. Library employees have also been in the process of implementing many of the work group’s other recommendations.
Regular visitors to Cabell Library have noticed the taped-off construction area on a main concourse of the first floor for months. Construction began in January 2022 and has been delayed during pandemic supply-chain issues and labor shortages.
These new facilities are available for anyone who chooses to use them. They are equipped with automatic door openers to assist people of varying abilities. The new restrooms in Cabell add to existing gender-inclusive restrooms on the lower level (two restrooms) and third floor (one).
All new gender-inclusive restrooms also have baby changing tables.
