Faculty: Apply by November 7 for state grants to support the adoption of open, free course materials

VCU Libraries, in support of open and affordable course materials across the VCU community, announces that a new round of VIVA Open Adopt Grants is open for applications. These $2,000 grants empower Virginia faculty with the resources and time they need to integrate existing open or no-cost materials into a syllabus. Awardees will receive support from VIVA in adopting existing Open Educational Resources (OER), including access to Pressbooks, ISKME’s Open Author Tool, and copyright consultations.

Applications are due Nov. 7. Award notification will take place on Dec. 15.

Full or part-time faculty may apply. Proposals must be from an individual course instructor and must support the adoption of OER, including textbooks, software, test banks and ancillary materials, and library resources that replace traditional textbooks or other costly class resources.

“VCU Libraries is excited for a new round of VIVA Open Grants this year,” said Open Educational Resources Librarian Abbey Childs. “This statewide program provides vital support to faculty to identify and adopt open and no-cost materials for their courses, which helps make education more accessible and affordable for our students. A number of VIVA Open Grants’ past awardees have been VCU faculty, and it’s been amazing to see the amount of money this program has saved our students. We hope faculty will take advantage of this opportunity so we can see that impact continue to grow.”
