Reverence & Remembrance: Contextualizing the East Marshall Street Well Project

Description

“Reverence & Remembrance,” an exhibit that honors those whose remains were uncovered in 1994 during the construction of a VCU medical building, is now on view on the fourth floor of James Branch Cabell Library. The display illuminates a dark chapter in VCU’s history when Black people’s bodies, after they were used for anatomical study in the 19th century, were dumped in mass graves in wells on the MCV Campus.

The new exhibit, curated by Dr. Maggie Unverzagt Goddard, postdoctoral fellow for the East Marshall Street Well Project, is one more step in a project to properly memorialize and honor these people. More on the East Marshall Street Well Project.
