An Evening with Chris Burnside

Description

Chris Burnside, a leading light for many years in the Richmond dance scene, returns to campus in a new role–author.

For most of his life as a teacher, performer and choreographer, his creative language was kinetic movement. Now, he’s turned to a new medium–the written word. His memoir, The Man from Figueras, is published on Scholars Compass and also available in a limited edition printed books.

Burnside’s memoir is from memory. He did not keep a journal or diary although some of his chapters are packed with detail. He admits to having a near-photographic memory. And he would reflect, recite stories to others and use the experiences in performances. “I had the kind of memory that when something struck me as out of the ordinary or I was learning something, it was very clear to me. I never forgot those moments.”

His life has been full of memorable moments, some of which are shared in his book. At this book launch event, Burnside and his husband, Karl Green, will read passages and engage in conversation. The evening will conclude with a reception and a book signing. This event is free and open to the public and will be available both in person and via Zoom.
