VCU Libraries offers a wide range of webinars to help researchers at all levels in the health sciences master online tools and other resources and strategies that benefit research projects. Topics include making the most of PubMed, finding scientific and medical images, using Creative Commons, mining databases and searching for reliable consumer health information.

Learn the basics of doing a good search and how those apply in PubMed/Medline and CINAHL. In the course of the workshop, participants will learn about the basic features of each database and search techniques such as the use of Boolean Operators to limit searches. Methods to identify locally available journals or full-text online articles will also be discussed. At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Mendeley Basics

Mendeley is a tool that helps users manage, share, annotate and cite their citation collections. Citation collections can be stored in the cloud and used across various devices or platforms. In this workshop, participants will learn to create a Mendeley account, import citations and PDFs from various databases, organize citation collections, manage groups, and more. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

Create a new account
Import citations and PDFs from various databases
Organize citation collections
Annotate PDFs and make notes that can be shared
Use groups to collaborate with others
Use the Mendeley plugin to properly place in-text citations and create a bibliography in a selected citation style

This virtual "hands-on" workshop covers the basics of VoiceThread, a tool for creating collaborative, multimedia slide decks. These slides can embed images, documents and videos while allowing participants to interact with content by leaving comments via audio, video, text, annotations and images. The workshop will be interactive and is best experienced live, although a recording will be made available afterward.

When doing any research project, it is best practice to search in more than one database. However each database functions differently, and it can be useful to understand the particulars of transferring a successful search in one database to a different resource. This webinar will provide an overview of how to translate a search in PubMed to another useful biomedical database, Embase.
