VCU Libraries offers a wide range of webinars and in-person workshops to help researchers at all levels in the health sciences master online tools and other resources and strategies that benefit research projects. Topics include making the most of PubMed, finding scientific and medical images, using Creative Commons, mining databases and searching for reliable consumer health information.

SAGE Research Methods: Your Online Research Partner

The Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) provides access to full text from over 1300 journals, plus evidence-based care sheets, legal cases, drug records, and more than 200 books. Through this workshop, participants will learn the basic features of CINAHL and search techniques such as limits and the use of Boolean Operators. Also, methods to identify locally available journals or full-text online articles will also be discussed.
LGBTQIA+ Health Information and Resources

From discrimination to lack of access, LGBT+ individuals face unique challenges in health care. Would you like to know more about the healthcare needs and rights of LGBT+ individuals? Perhaps you or someone you know identifies as LGBT+ and you would like to learn more about patient rights.

Web of Science Basics
Oct. 10, noon–12:50 p.m.
Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences provides access to Web of Science. This is an excellent database to enhance your biomedical literature search by allowing one stop cross-disciplinary searching. Along with subject or author searching, you can do a cited reference search to find out who has cited you or who else has cited the method paper you are using for your research.
Finding Scientific Images
Oct. 15, 12:10–1 p.m.
Need to find images for a paper, poster, class or presentation? This workshop will help you navigate image options and resources. Participants will learn how to access licensed resources including ARTstor, AP Images, and Anatomy.TV through VCU Libraries as well as free resources. Attendees will also learn about copyright considerations for the use of images in the classroom, for publication, and in presentations.
Make the Most of myNCBI
Oct. 16, 12:10–1 p.m.
Customize your experience with PubMed and other NCBI databases by registering for a free MyNCBI account. MyNCBI lets you set default display options, highlight search terms in results, keep your search history, create alerts and citation collections, and much more. Tools such as My Bibliography and SciENcv can help you comply with federal requirements. This webinar will introduce and demonstrate many of the tools available through MyNCBI.
Getting Started with Zotero

Zotero is a tool that helps users manage their citation collections. In this workshop participants will learn to how create a Zotero account, import citations and PDFs from various platforms, organize citation collections, generate in-text citations and bibliographies using Zotero’s Microsoft Word Plugin, and much more.
OVID: Medline and Embase for Nurses
Oct. 21, 7:30–8:30 p.m.
Become a pro at using Ovid MEDLINE and Embase, learn advanced database features that will help you navigate the literature more thoroughly and precisely. This workshops will provide attendees with an overview of features used by medical librarians including the use of Medical Subject Heading (MeSH), Emtree (Embase subject headings), adjacency searching, Search Alerts, and efficient organizing and collecting options.

Embase Basics

Embase is a database containing biomedicine and pharmacology citations (1974–present). It features an international scope and is recommended for use in systematic reviews and for locating drug and medical device information. This session will provide an overview of the basic features of the database, including basic search techniques. Methods to identify locally available journals or full-text online articles will also be discussed.
