Fashion Revolution Workshop

Description

WORKSHOP DETAILS

Join VCU Libraries for our annual Textile Mending Clinic as a part of Fashion Revolution Week 2026. This year’s theme is “Conscious Fashion is a Collective Mission,” which is focused on building a better fashion industry for future generations.

During this drop-in workshop, makers from VCU and the greater Richmond community will teach you how to mend your clothes while advocating for the importance of slow fashion. Participants will have the opportunity to learn valuable sewing skills, there will be stations for various activities, such as button repair, garment hems, simple seam repairs and hand-sewing techniques.

About Fashion Revolution Week

A pivotal international incident is the backdrop for this workshop at The Workshop. On April 24, 2013, a clothing factory in Bangladesh collapsed, killing 1,134 people and injuring more than 2,500. The Rana Plaza collapse is considered the deadliest garment factory disaster in history. The tragedy unleashed criminal charges, street protests, and debate about corporate social responsibility across global supply chains.

Fashion Revolution established Fashion Revolution Day on April 24, 2014, to commemorate the Rana Plaza garment factory disaster the year before. Fashion Revolution Day has since evolved into Fashion Revolution Week, an annual campaign bringing together the world’s largest fashion activism movement for a week of action. Fashion Revolution advocates reform of the fashion industry and the need for accountability and transparency in the global supply chain.

Small actions can lead to a big impact. Individual efforts, when multiplied by tens, hundreds, and thousands of people, create powerful movements that cannot be ignored. We must focus and streamline our vast network of voices to change the very rules the fashion industry plays by.
