Saddle Up and Sign up for a Richmond Public Library Card

Stop by the Richmond Public Library table to sign up for a library card and learn more about their services. Signing up for a card is easy. All you need is a state or federal issued ID and a document with your current address. With your card you can access physical and digital collections including books, audiobooks, movies, music, newspapers and magazines.  

The Workshop of the Wild West

Meet the staff of The Workshop, Cabell Library’s creative technologies space, who will share information about the media equipment, studios, hands-on maker technologies and expert support that they offer to help you share your ideas with the world. Learn about cameras, audio recorders, 3D printers, virtual reality headsets, motion capture, design software and more–all free for all students. Open to all students. As a student, you carry a lot each day. What should you do if you lose your favorite water bottle, headphones, or phone? Join us to learn practical tips to secure your belongings, stay organized, and prevent loss. Use our label-maker for your items and discover what to do if you lose something in the library.

Health Sciences Library Open House 
Aug. 27, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Health Sciences Library Lobby 

The Health Sciences Library invites all new and returning students and new faculty to visit and explore the library’s private study and collaborative spaces. Learn about library resources and services available in the building and electronically from anywhere you’re working or studying. Stop at the table in the foyer and meet the staff and librarians assigned to your health sciences schools and programs. Tours are available upon request or take a self-guided tour.

Other highlights: 

The only such high-tech creative space on the MCV Campus, The Makerspace offers 3D printers, a laser cutter, a Cricut paper and vinyl cutter–all free to use for VCU students, faculty and staff. Beginners are welcome; no experience is necessary to use the Makerspace. The library staff offers orientations for each piece of equipment and will coach new users. Visit The Makerspace during the Open House to learn more and get ideas for your next creative project.

Special Collections and Archives at VCU houses one of the most significant collections of medical artifacts and rare medical texts in the South. During the Open House, learn more about collections and step into the history of VCU with an interactive timeline game. Place events in order from the university's founding to the opening of new schools and buildings and look back on VCU’s origins. See some of the medical artifacts on display in the building. 

Health Sciences Library Makerspace Open House

The Health Sciences Library Makerspace is hosting an open house from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Makerspace offers two 3D printers, a laser cutter, a Cricut paper and vinyl cutter all free to use for VCU students, faculty and staff. Beginners are welcome; there is no experience necessary to use the Makerspace, and the library offers orientation sessions for each piece of equipment. Stop by to learn more about our offerings and get ideas for your next creative project.

VCU Libraries' Special Collection and Archives hosts an open house Tuesday, August 27. Step into the history of VCU with SCA's interactive timeline game. Place events in order from the university's founding to the opening of new schools and buildings and look back on how VCU came to be. Visit the lobby at the Health Sciences Library on the main floor between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to take part.

Iron Horse Tracks: A library tour for engineering students

Join this engineering-oriented tour of Cabell Library to find the space for studying, group meetings, and prototyping. Extras for graduate students and international students will be included too. Spur your creativity with a tour for art students 
Sept. 6, 10 - 11 a.m., noon - 1 p.m. and 2 - 3 p.m.

Arts librarians lead tours focused on the arts and Cabell Library’s related resources, services and expertise. The tour highlights inspiring art materials and creative spaces. Topics will include: finding visual and performing arts books and magazines; introducing VCU’s unique Comic Arts Collection and Book Art Collection; and using The Workshop’s tools and spaces for producing creative work. Each one-hour tour will be capped at 20 participants. Tours begin at 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. Registration is required. Questions?
