Samantha Guss

As of spring semester 2023, as a Research and Education Librarian, Samantha Guss supports public health programs. This is a new focus for the position and is designed to meet the growing needs of VCU’s burgeoning public health programs including those long established through the School of Medicine and those developing in other disciplines such as through he College of Health Professions. 

Guss supports the research and educational needs of the students, faculty, and staff on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus. In her role as liaison to the VCU public health programs, Guss works closely with other members of the Research and Education Department to assess the needs of growing public health programs at VCU. She works in collaboration with liaisons for the VCU School of Medicine and the VCU College of Health Professions to address these needs and develop new offerings to support long standing and growing public health programs. Guss also collaborates with department colleagues to support the department’s long standing research and instruction services including providing support for evidence-based practice, systematic reviews, grant funded research and outreach efforts. She collaborates with other library departments engaged in teaching, learning and research to support students and researchers engaged in public health related research. 

Before joining VCU Libraries’ faculty, Guss served as the Social Sciences Librarian for Data, Statistics, and Government Information at the University of Richmond, Boatwright Memorial Library. In addition, from 2017 to 2022, she served as adjunct faculty teaching in the First-Year Seminar program. She co-taught the writing and research-intensive course “A Generation of Cynics: Bias, Neutrality, and the Internet” with fellow librarian Sojourna Cunningham. Guss has published numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented her work at regional, national and international conferences. 

In professional associations, Guss is active in the Virginia Scholarly Communication Interest Group, the International Association for Social Science Information Services and Technology (IASSIST), the Inter-university Consortium for Policy and Social Research (ICPSR).
